Frequently asked questions

Do you need to dilute lime paint?

You may dilute lime paint with 10 % water. If you dilute with more water, unwanted white limepatches may appear. Lime plaster can be used without dilution.

Can you apply lime paint on existing plaster?

Yes, plaster is a mineral substance on which lime paint and plaster will adhere very well. On existing plaster, make sure it is dry and stable. New plaster needs to be cured for at least 28 days. To avoid too much suction, apply a coat of our wall primer first.

Can you apply lime paint on wood?

Yes, but always apply a coat of wall primer.

Can you apply lime paint on wallpaper?

Yes, but wallpaper must not suffer from cracks and/or uneven surfaces. In case of doubt, always apply a coat of our wall primer.

Can you apply lime paint over lime paint?

Can lime paint be applied on latex paint?

Yes, but we recommend applying a coat of our wall primer on top of the latex paint.

Can lime paint be applied on a lacquer paint?

What is the coverage?

For lime paint you are looking at a coverage of around 8-13 m2 per liter. For lime plaster 6 m2 per liter.

Can you mix lime paint and lime plaster with other paint?

No, you can’t mix lime paint and plaster with other paints.

Are the lime paint and lime plaster environmentally friendly?

Yes, lime paint and lime plaster are made from 100% natural materials without any artificial binders. Due to its alkaline properties, Lime paint and plaster is anti-bacterial and anti-fungal, and the production process is completely CO2 neutral. Lime paint and plaster has moisture extraction properties, so you should wear gloves during application.

Are lime paint and lime plaster vegan friendly?

Yes, lime paint and lime plaster are completely vegan friendly.

What are the drying times of lime paint and lime plaster?

We recommend drying times of 8 hours between coats. Shorter drying times may create unwanted glossy patches in the finish.

Can you apply lime paint and lime plaster in bathrooms?

Yes. Lime Paint and plaster has anti-bacterial and anti-fungal properties and is very well suited for use in wet rooms. Do not expose lime paint and plaster to direct water, such as in shower cubicles. To protect walls in wet rooms, apply several coats of our special sealer.

Is it washable?

Lime paint and lime plaster are porous and become a solid part of the surface but also of a stain. Without further protection, stains are very hard to remove. To make lime paint and lime plaster more water/stain repellent, we recommend applying several coats of our special sealer. The first coats need to be dilute with 20 % water. Apply coats until the surface is fully saturated. Applying too thick coats or irregular coats may lead to white patches becoming visible on darker colors.

Do I need to prepare walls before applying lime paint and lime plaster?

Lime paint and plaster need a mineral surface to adhere to. Although it is dependent on the surface, we recommend to always apply a coat of Piet Boom wall-primer as an undercoat.

Can you also apply lime paint and lime plaster with a roller?

No because a roller will leave traces of pigment and overlapping patches. These patches will remain visible.

How do you apply lime paint and plaster?

Lime paint is applied with a wide brush with soft but long fibers. This creates a nice texture and a charming effect. The best results are achieved when you apply lime paint from a dry area into a wet, already painted area. Lime plaster is a very thick paint. You can apply it with a brush, but you would need to spread and smooth with a trowel. You can also apply lime plaster straight with only a trowel.
